Love in Action

Purpose:  The Love in Action (LIA) fund is a giving opportunity for those with a love in their heart to support mission outreach beyond what is in the Prince of Peace budget.  LIA is funded by “above and beyond” giving by Prince of Peace members after first giving their tithe to the Prince of Peace congregation.  The purpose of the LIA fund is to provide the resources to assist in the accomplishment of the Great Commission--to preach the Gospel to every nation and to bring the word of the Lord to those at the far ends of the earth.

Background:  The LIA fund was started in 1988 and is designed to support funding of ministries as set out in the LIA Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws--mainly, overseas mission outreach projects and missionaries as well as financial support to seminary students, primarily, minority students planning to serve multi-ethnic ministries here or abroad.

Since the inception of the fund, LIA has provided almost a million dollars to support the schooling of seminarians, missionary teams in far away places such as Russia, China, Thailand, and Liberia as well as selected projects such as Mission India (training for Christian church planters in India), the LCMS Together in Mission Fund, and several smaller ministries. We are excited about expanding the LIA funding to additional opportunities such as a mission in Kenya. By contributing to LIA, you will have the joy and satisfaction of seeing a part of the treasure with which the Lord has entrusted us used to carry out His command to take the “good news” message to all nations.

How to provide support:  If you are interested in contributing to this fund, simply add the amount you wish to contribute to your weekly envelope and indicate the amount under the Love in Action line on the front of the envelope.  For further information, please contact Rod Higgins (703) 425-3455.

Mission India (MI) and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya (ELCK).  In January of 2007 LIA supported the travel of two pastors of the Kenyan Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya (ELCK) to India, to acquaint them with the work of MI.  Rt. Rev. Richard Ogosi, the Bishop of the Lake Diocese, and Rev. David Chuchu joined a tour group of LCMS pastors in Hyderabad and participated in orientation sessions and other meetings with Indian Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELC) pastors and church planters.  At the close of the tour, Bishop Ogosi and Rev. Chuchu agreed to explore the possibility of transferring the MI church-planting and Children’s Bible Club ministries to Kenya.  LIA will continue to support this mission collaboration between MI and Kenya through additional training and travel support of the ELCK.

Rebuilding of the Church in Rungu, Kenya.  During 2004 LIA partnered with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenya (ELCK) in rebuilding the church in Rungu.  The original building was of traditional Kenyan design and in urgent need of replacement.  The original church is shown below.

The leadership of the Lake Diocese of western Kenya conceived the design the new church, and many of the church members of Rungu contributed to the building materials and labor during construction; LIA provided substantial financial support.  In May of 2005 the new church was dedicated during a worship service led by the Presiding Bishop of Kenya, Walter Obare.  The Rev. Dr. Terence Wieting of Prince of Peace, a board member of LIA, traveled to Kenya to participate in the dedication service.  The new church of Rungu is shown below.

Love in Action - Support Commitments for 2007

Thanks to your many generous donations to Love In Action (LIA), the fund has been able to provide support for many mission outreach programs. Since its inception, Love In Action has provided $794,000 to support the schooling of seminarians, missionary teams, and foreign mission projects. In 2006 LIA made donations totaling $52,389 while still being able to grow the body of the invested fund to $575,000. So far in 2007, the following disbursements have been made:

Mission India, LIA has provided $15,000 support for the Church Planters training program. This money will be used to train indigenous Indians to go out into villages to plant home churches, establish Children’s Bible Clubs and teach literacy classes. This contribution provides half of the support for the church planters for one year and they provide the other half of their support. During the two years the students receive training they also spend extensive time planting churches. After the two year period the goal is for the Church Planters to be self supporting from the churches they have started.

Mission India (MI) has purchased land to build an Administrative and Training Center in Hyderabad. This facility will allow MI to train many more church planters much more cost effectively, since renting training space is very expensive even in Hyderabad. LIA will provide a gift of $50,000 this year for the building program and a similar gift in 2008.

LIA provided $6,350 for the Mission India Conference held at POP in February and purchased the book, "Why Pray?" as a Lenten devotional for all POP families.

Kenya: In January, LIA provided traveling expenses for Rev. David Chuchu and Bishop Richard Ogosi to attend the Mission India conference in India to see how the program operates and to determine if the concept of church planting and Children’s Bible Clubs could work in Kenya. They were very impressed with the work of MI and decided they would like to return to take the 4 weeks of training. LIA will provide $10,000 to enable them to go through this training program.

Seminary Student support: LIA has provided tuition assistance to seminarian Marc Cohen for the school year of 2006-2007. He will receive an additional $5,000 for the fall semester of 2007. Marc is planning on serving in an Hispanic outreach capacity upon graduation. He is currently a 2nd year seminary student in St. Louis. LIA has also invited Marc and his wife to visit POP in the near future and will provide transportation for them.

A number of other mission outreach projects are still being considered and will receive gifts before the end of the year. If you would like to be a part of this effort to support mission projects and seminary students, please consider giving generously to Love In Action. Remember, this is an over and above your regular contribution to Prince of Peace. One way you can contribute is by increasing your weekly POP contribution and marking that amount for LIA on the envelope.
