An Update on Holy Comforters Activities - May 2007 |
| The
Holy Comforters have completed making the full sized quilts which we
will give to Lutheran World Relief for distribution to disaster and
poverty stricken areas around the world. For the next four weeks
we will be making baby quilts which will be going to a small district
around Hamburg in South Africa. Amy Zacaroli and her husband have
founded an organization called "25:40" ( Matt. 25:40 = "If you have done
it for the least of my children you have done it for me.") Amy
left for a week- long trip to South Africa and took a dozen of the
quilts we had completed with her. See the "Quilt Makers - Holy
Comforters" section of the
Women of Prince of Peace Photo Gallery for a picture of the children
who received the quilts at Nompomulelo Hospital, a small medical
facility which has recently opened in Hamburg and a picture of the
Director of the hospital looking at the back of one of the quilts which
is inscribed with the words, "Love and Comfort from Springfield, VA." Amy related the following story: After getting permission to give the quilts to the children, one of the nurses collected all the quilts. Amy quickly explained that the quilts were intended to belong to the children who had received them. The nurse quietly said " I know, but please come with me for just a minute". The nurse took her and the quilts into the office of the hospital director to show her. The Director said to Amy, "Just this morning this nurse came to me with a written proposal to the South African government requesting money for blankets and small toys for the children here. The Director said she had to replied that the government simply did not have enough money to buy things like that. But as she examined the quilts which Amy brought, she said, God has provided these quilts which will warm our children’s small bodies and hearts." The Holy Comforters will continue to make quilts for "25:40" through the end of May. If you would like to contribute to this effort, please contact Mary Lion (703-451-5822).
