Being an Acolyte or Crucifer at PoPFirst, A Word About WorshipWorship is a group event. It is a weekly experience of Christians who meet in the presence of the Most High God. Many different people come to worship. Some are there for the first time and hear of God's grace for them in Christ. For others it is a personal time to rest from the week and prepare for the next under God's blessing. Pastors, organists, liturgists, choirs, lay readers, acolytes, crucifers and ushers all assist in the worship experience in the presence of Almighty God. What is an Acolyte or Crucifer?Samuel who assisted Eli in the Old Testament temple might have been a very early acolyte. By the fourth century, A.D., pastors were assisted in leading worship by specially trained people called acolytes. Acolyte means "follower or attendant". Acolytes were given the responsibility to care for the cross, candles, incense, and to assist in other ways. Originally, serving as an acolyte was one of the ways to prepare to be a pastor. Today, being an acolyte refers to lighting the Altar candles while the person carrying the cross in the entrance and exit processions is called a crucifier. More than just Candle Lighters or Cross BearersAcolytes are not just candle lighters. Crucifers are not just cross bearers. Acolytes and crucifiers are active participants in worship and are worship leaders. Acolytes and crucifiers enable and encourage those in attendance in worship. They are are part of a team and are examples of devotion and reverence. Their actions have meaning. Lighting the candles reminds us of Jesus, the Light of the world. Leading the worship procession with the cross announces the presence of God in a visible way, calling all present to Holy worship. Being acolytes and crucifers and serving in the holy place of the chancel of the church. then, is an honor and a privilege and a blessing to the congregation. We are thankful to God for for the willingness and service of the acolytes and crucifers. May God bless you in this service to Him and may He give you joy in serving. Program contact: Rob Lansing.
